FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
In 1972 the CLA (Canadian Lacrosse Association) inaugurated the first Founders’ trophy which commemorates the founders of organized lacrosse. While the game of lacrosse is famously known as the Creator’s game by Indigenous peoples, Dr. George W. Beers of Montreal Quebec is regarded as the Father of organized lacrosse and penned the first rule book. In 1867 Dr. Beers was instrumental in organizing the National Lacrosse Association (NLA) which has now come to be known as the CLA.
The proud and heralded lacrosse community of Six Nations truly believes that Haudenosaunee children are born with sticks in their hands. Statistics have revealed that Six Nations produces the highest number of National Lacrosse League (NLL) players on the continent, with the Six Nations Rebels Association contributing 28 drafted players to NLL teams alone.
As Six Nations Rebels President Scott Maracle relates, “The Six Nations Rebels association is thrilled to be hosting the 2012 Founders’ Cup and we look forward to welcoming the Jr B lacrosse community from across Canada who will enjoy a firsthand glimpse of the remarkable beauty and fabled history of Six Nations.”
The modern and one-of-a-kind Iroquois Lacrosse Arena is the solely dedicated venue and is located within the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. Surrounded by vibrant, neighboring towns and cities, this arena is home to the three-time Mann Cup winning Six Nations Chiefs; two-time Minto Cup Champion Six Nations Arrows and four-time Founders’ Cup Champion Six Nations Rebels. It is also home to numerous lacrosse leagues and associations including two professional clubs; the Iroquois Ironmen and the Ohsweken Demons.
